Why Researchers Are Studying DHA and Mental Health

When people think about mental health, they usually think about stress, trauma, relationships, or brain chemistry. Few people aside from select researchers think about nutrition

In recent years, scientists have become more interested in the relationship between omega-3 fatty acids—especially DHA and EPA—and mental health outcomes including mood, cognition, motivation, and depression.

That interest is not random. The human brain is made up largely of fat, and DHA is one of its major structural components. DHA helps maintain the flexibility and function of brain-cell membranes, influencing how neurons communicate and how efficiently signals move throughout the brain. In other words: The brain’s physical structure affects how the brain functions emotionally and cognitively.

Researchers are now exploring what happens when that structure is not adequately supported over time. A growing body of research available through PubMed has found associations between higher omega-3 status and lower rates of depression and anxiety. In one large recent analysis involving hundreds of thousands of adults, individuals with higher omega-3 levels showed significantly lower odds of a history of depression and anxiety.

Omega 3s and Inflammation

Scientists are also studying the connection between omega-3s and inflammation.

That matters because chronic inflammation is increasingly being investigated as a contributing factor in certain forms of depression, fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction. Research suggests DHA and EPA may influence inflammatory pathways, neurotransmitter activity, and communication between brain cells.

This does not mean omega-3s are a cure for depression. Mental health is complex, deeply personal, and influenced by many factors. But the growing research does point toward the fact that nutrition may play a larger role in emotional and cognitive well-being.

Many diets today contain large amounts of ultra-processed foods while providing relatively little omega-3 intake from fatty fish or other rich sources. As a result, many people may be consuming far less DHA than the brain was designed to operate with consistently.

Some people notice this as difficulty focusing. Others describe low motivation, mental fatigue, or feeling emotionally “flat.”

One individual explained it this way: “I started thinking about brain health differently when I realized the brain is a physical organ that depends on physical nutrients.”
